British Columbia, Canada, is blessed to have a varied geographic setting; the northern part of Vancouver Island, around the Pacific Rim region, contains some of the most rugged, natural settings in the country.
On our way back to Vancouver from surfing in Tofino in March 2011, we stopped at one of BC’s most impressive parks, commonly known as Cathedral Grove. The park contains some of the tallest and oldest trees in the country, many of them approaching 800 years, and growing strongly.
About a two hour drive from Nanaimo ferry station, the park is a must-visit for anyone traveling over to Tofino. A visit to the park can be thoroughly enjoyed in a 30 minute stop. This is the best place to experience the true ruggedness of the North American Pacific Rim coast.
